Last night we were talking and they told me a guy I used to work with in high school, at a hardware store, had passed away. He was not young by any stretch, he was 76, had either worked steel working or in mines, I forget which, for a lot of his life, and had breathing issues, smoking did not help that. The problem is the guy was really nice, he would give you the shirt off his back. I learned a ton from him at that hardware store. (A job which I would recommend to anyone looking for a job while in school, you learn a lot, especially at one of those mom and pop type hardware stores, rather than a Home Depot.) Paul (that was his name) was definitely a riley older guy. He had actually left our town when he was younger, when his brother whom he had worked for at the time (and actually was working for again, as he owned the store) asked him to do something and he got pissed and left, apparently he ended up moving to California and not coming back till years later. I have not seen him in years, and he probably never thought of me since I left that job, but he is definitely someone I will remember...
I also found out that Paul's brother, Roger, the owner of the hardware store is not doing well. Roger, is much older, he is actually the oldest of three brothers, the other two having died already. He is 92 now, and apparently suffering from prostrate cancer, and having to use a walker. Now at 92 you would think that a walker would not be an uncommon thing, but when I think back, I met the guy when he was already 76, and he had JUST STARTED SKIING. I kid you not, he was 76 years old and he started skiing. He loved to go and would go a few times each winter. A couple years after I left the job, I heard he broke a leg going downhill, and well you know at that age broken bones are not quite what they were to heal...I guess that cut down his skiing expeditions. Apparently now since he is not doing well he and his wife have moved down to Florida to be near his daughter. He and his wife are living in an assisted living facility and apparently enjoying it. Definitely not the way I would have expected him to go...
Then I find out that my great aunt, who is not youngster either 92 as well is not doing well. She has an enlarged hard and water around her heart apparently. Here is another person who was very active until just a few years ago. She still shoveled and had a garden. Now I guess its just a waiting game. On top of that she gets to be confused about things, like what day it is, what time of day etc...
Oh what we have to look forward to...
